STEM Resources

The NSF-funded Materials World Modules (MWM) Program has produced a series of interdisciplinary modules based on topics in materials science, including Composites, Ceramics, Concrete, Biosensors, Biodegradable Materials, Smart Sensors, Polymers, Food Packaging, and Sports Materials.

The modules are designed for use in middle and high school science, technology, and engineering, and math classes and have been used by over 35,000 students in schools nationwide.

MWM is based on principles of inquiry and design and emphasizes active, hands-on learning. Most importantly, MWM provides middle and high school students of all ability levels with opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world problems while helping teachers to meet National Science Education Standards and State Standards.  Check out the site at the web address http://www.materialsworldmodules.org.

 

WorldBook Online

Webster Parish has purchased a subscription to World Book Online for student use at school.  This online encyclopedia consists of World Book Kids, World Book Student and WorldBook Advanced.  There are activities, multimedia resources, an atlas, a citation builder and many other resources.  WorldBook Online also includes Spanish and French specialty resources.  Click on the picture to access this resource at school.

Lesson Writer

LessonWriter is an online tool for teachers which creates opportunities to teach reading comprehension in all subject areas.  The web site generates lessons and plans for teaching English Language Arts standards from any reading passage.  One version is available at no cost and subscription additions can be added to enhance analysis of student data.  Visit the site at http://lessonwriter.com/default.aspx .

 

Centers for Disease Prevention and Control

FLU SEASON ALERTS from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

School districts across the nation have been alerted to prepare for the flu season as students return to school.  Webster Parish Schools are taking precautionary steps to prevent the spread of flu as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

NSBA Site Visit in Louisiana

Congratulations to Calcasieu Parish for being selected for a National School Boards Association (NSBA) Site Visit for 2009!  NSBA selects only three school districts in the nation for site visits each year.  Participants in the Site Visit were given Flip Videos to document the visit.  Check out some of the great videos that have been posted at http://www.cpsb.org/nsba .  There are some excellent videos that demonstrate effective integration of technology into the classroom.

 

 

Horizon K-12 Report

SETDA 2009 National Trends Report

Intel Education Initiative

Students need 21st Century Skills to become producitve citizens.  Educators are expected to provide learning experiences for students that effectively integrate the skills needed to empower students.  To learn more about the INTEL Education Initiative, check out the web address http://www.intel.com/education .  The Louisiana Department of Education has state-approved INTEL initiatives for educators which include the INTEL Leadership Forum, INTEL Teach Essentials Course and LaTEL Course.  To learn more about these initiatives, you can contact the Region VII TLTC Facilitator at 318-377-5434 or via email at nstephens@websterpsb.org .

Are you an educator who needs resources for the classroom absolutely free?  Check out Thinkfinity sponsored by Verizon at http://www.thinkfinity.org !  This site covers all curriculum subjects as well as adult literacy and 21st Century Skills.  The content partners include ArtsEdge, EconoEdLink, EDSITEment, Illuminations, Literacy Network, ReadWriteThink, Science NetLinks, Smithsonian's History Explorer, and Xpeditions.  The contents of the site include lesson plans correlated to national and state standards, interactive games and simulations, primary source documents, worksheets, reference materials, podcasts, videos and other multimedia resources and assessments.  There is even an overview video on the home page.  Click on the Educator tab to learn more!

 

Fuel Our Future Now

Check out this great site for teaching students about alternative fuel sources at http://www.fuelourfuturenow.com .  This site is provided by Discovery Education and uses information from the U.S. Department of Energy.  The site contains videos, interactive simulations, lesson plans, virtual lab, and real-life scenarios associated with various sources of fuel.
